The 2008 Meteor Preservation Project

The 2008 Meteor Preservation Project was a cooperative effort between GLSPS, SPM, (Superior Public Museums), and LSMMA.  This year April 26 & 27 was a cold weekend in Duluth, but it didn't dampen the spirits of the work team.  About 40 participants scrapped, painted, fixed leaks and had fun doing it.  Photos below.

Helen Ready to Start Painting

The day started with breakfast at Perkins.

And there's always time for a story from Tom.

A hot breakfast helped prepare us for the cold day ahead.

Oh yes, the day had to start with snow.

Project Manager Phil Kerber photographs the work as well as supervising.

We touched up the paint on the engine.

Mike Stich cleans and paints the windlass cabin.

Linda models her newly painted work top.

Helen painted the port light wells to prevent rust.

Dick and Tim break for coffee and to warm their hands.

Break time is always time for fun.

Lunch was provided by the Meteor Museum group.

Keeping warm was a prime concern all day.

Phil supervises the painting of the deck rail.

The largest project on the deck was to replace the air vent covers to keep water from leaking into the ship.

Tom lead the group doing the air vent cover replacement.

Dick and John cut the vent covers.

Bob installs and seals the vent covers.

Tim painted the interior cabins.

Ken bids bon voyage.

John breaks from scrapping paint to smile for the camera.

Several of the group packed into Phil's camper trailer for the night.

The camper had a heater and was comfortable for the night.

And the final product.  It's something that makes you proud to be a part of the project.
