GLSPS Fun Dive Project

(R/V Preservation docked at Silver Bay Marina)

August 24 - 25, 2019

This event is put together to get our non-active GLSPS Members together and experience first hand what it's like to dive off the Society's Research vessel the RV Preservation.  Members can also see first hand how we do things on-board the vessel which we make as safe and organized as possible.  This is NOT a cattle boat like you would see with some Charters.  It is an excellent way to join us and have the opportunity to be more active in the Society.  Whatever level you decide, there is a place for you as an active member.  We are always striving to gain new members and especially active members that like to dive and participate in the projects the GLSPS provides.
Diving off the GLSPS Research vessel is one of the benefits of being a member.  This is without a doubt the largest benefit the members have and can enjoy, both divers and non-divers!
The event fills up fast because of the popularity so please don't hesitate to register ASAP.

Please Note: This schedule and dive locations could change at any time due to weather, lake conditions or any unforeseen event.

Itinerary (Tentative)

Most project participants arrive Friday (August 24) evening and sleep onboard the vessel.  (First come, first served for bunk location!)  If enough participants are willing and able, a Friday evening dive on the Hesper can be arranged.

Saturday, after breakfast on board, departure from the dock is 9:00 AM sharp!  Since this is a “fun” dive project, departure is a little more relaxed than a typical work project.  Generally, we can get 2 or 3 dives on the Madeira, and/or a dive under Split Rock Lighthouse.  Lunch is served on board and tanks filled between dives.

This year, and if participants agree, the third dive could be on the Charlie Anchor. This will be a mix of wreck diving and lake bottom structure diving.

Dinner:  Saturday night is “on your own” with the group at a local restaurant.  After dinner, we could have a campfire on the shore at the marina by the beach area?

Sunday:  The day comes early as we head out and around the breakwater to the Hesper.  This wreck is well protected so we can get 2 dives in before heading back to the dock to clean up the boat and head back to reality.

Thank you to all that participate in this project.  We hope you have fun diving the shipwrecks the active members enjoy and learning about GLSPS Projects and procedures.  Hopefully, you will be able to participate in a future GLSPS Project.

Watch for the report and pictures of this project in the "Projects Archive" page on the GLSPS website soon after the project.

Safe diving,
