The Preservation is becoming the work platform for many of our GLSPS projects. After a major reconditioning job done by some of our members and many friends, it was launched at Spirit Lake Marina near Duluth in Sept '06. The 30ft steel displacement hull (designed and built by Schwraz Marine of Two Rivers Wisconsin in 1960) is powered by two Ford Lehman Industrial Diesels. It has berthing for 6, and along with the galley, fridge, and a head, we are able to accomodate 10 divers for a day trip. We now can use it as an openwater work / dive platform to map and document sites ( the Mayflower, Gold Rock Point ; and do repair work on submerged ships ( S. P. Ely, S.S. America ). We have 4 people assigned to captain her for project outings, so we now have many opportunities to get underway on Lake Superior. Our first projects included work on the S.P. Ely and the Mayflower; with plans to work Gold Rock Point, the S.P. Ely, the Niagara Buoy Placement, the Charlie anchor, Grand Marais harbor and on to the S.S. America in the coming future, so this will become a true, Great Lakes Shipwreck Preservation boat.
Work will begin again in the spring weekends in Duluth at Spirit Lake Marina, 121 Spring Street, Duluth, MN 55808. We will be car pooling to Duluth, staying on the boat. Phone Ken Knutson at 612.861-8851 for more information. Mapquest Map.
