Jay Hanson from North Shore Scenic Cruises has helped the GLSPS on many projects. Jay has many years of experience as a Captain, dive shop owner, dive instructor and commercial diver.

Jay has taken a different path for the past few years and his scuba charters are no longer available. However, in 2012, Jay purchased the Wenonah which was previously used to transport people from Grand Portage, MN to Isle Royale, MI. He now offers day cruises on the North Shore of Lake Superior and is docked at the Silver Bay, MN Marina.

For the last two years the Wenonah has been laid up in dry dock to replace the entire steel bottom of the boat in order to pass the Coast Guard Safety Inspection.
The Wenonah will hopefully be ready for service in 2020.

If you are interested in booking a 2 hour - day charter cruise on the North Shore of Lake Superior, please click on the logo above for information on joining him and his staff on a north shore day cruise.

This training and review session is a required protocol and S.O.P. of the Great lakes Shipwreck Preservation Society for the RV Preservation Research Vessel.

All current and new Operators / Captains of the RV Preservation are required to go through the session annually.  It takes place the day of the annual launch day immediately after the shake down cruise of the boat.

2018 Participants:  Ken Knutson, Tim Pranke, Jimmy Christenson, Corey Daniel, Paul Imsland, Dean Soderbeck and, Phil Kerber - Trainer

Please Note:  To see what was performed to prepare the boat this year, please refer to RV Preservation work weekends event page.

During the session we go through 2 hours of classroom on the boat by going through all 8 pages of our check lists and briefings.  We then complete the rest of the training by performing real world scenarios.

1. Docking the boat and securing it three times successfully
2. Show you are able to instruct your crew how to tie off boat when docking
3. Emergency procedures in case of a diving accident
4. Knowing how to run and use all navigational equipment, chart plotter, sonar and radar
5. Knowing all engine functions and how to read the gauges
6. Scuba Compressor Operation and use
7. 120 volt electrical system operation
8. 12 volt electrical system and how it works with inverter
9. How to make absolutely sure the boat is secure at the dock before you leave
10. How to put the boat away before departure
11. Making sure ALL Liability Releases, Waiver and Medical Forms are filled out, signed and reviewed before boat can leave the dock
12. Finally - Captains / Operators responsibilities and required leadership.

All Captains / Operators, Crew and New upcoming Captains did very well and have passed the 2018 review / training session.

We are a proud group that likes to put our safety first!  This is why we have a strict safety protocol when it comes to our Research vessel and the diving operations performed aboard the vessel.
We can operate the boat in confidence when we stay on track for our annual training and put safety protocols first.  We have practiced this protocol (with many changes) since 2006 when the GLSPS first launched the RV Preservation.  We are proud of our vessel and keep it reliable, function-able and comfortable for our members to enjoy on the many projects we schedule for the season.

If you have any questions about the RV Preservation Research Vessel, or are interested in helping work and run the boat, please feel free to contact any of us from the "Contact Us" tab on the front page of the website.
