Jay Hanson from North Shore Scenic Cruises has helped the GLSPS on many projects. Jay has many years of experience as a Captain, dive shop owner, dive instructor and commercial diver.

Jay has taken a different path for the past few years and his scuba charters are no longer available. However, in 2012, Jay purchased the Wenonah which was previously used to transport people from Grand Portage, MN to Isle Royale, MI. He now offers day cruises on the North Shore of Lake Superior and is docked at the Silver Bay, MN Marina.

For the last two years the Wenonah has been laid up in dry dock to replace the entire steel bottom of the boat in order to pass the Coast Guard Safety Inspection.
The Wenonah will hopefully be ready for service in 2020.

If you are interested in booking a 2 hour - day charter cruise on the North Shore of Lake Superior, please click on the logo above for information on joining him and his staff on a north shore day cruise.

Closing Report:

Coming Soon!

The Madeira and Hesper Monitoring Project is typically an Annual Monitoring Project where the GLSPS Members shoot video and still photos of both the Madeira and Hesper shipwrecks to determine whether either ship has deteriorated from previous years.

This year we tried something different tha has never been tried on either of these ships before.  We attempted to shoot time lapse video to create a 3D Photogrammetry image of both the shipwrecks.   After shooting the entire underwater structure of each shipwreck, the time lapse photos will be loaded to a very powerful computer system and crunch the photos to create a 3D animated photo of the ship.  This will help in cataloging and of its deterioration.

Here is a link from Tim Pranke who shot most of the video to create the 3D image and also performed most of the editing using his powerful computer to create an awesome 3D animation of the Madeira.

You may need to be logged into your Facebook Account before this link will work!

Madeira 3D Animate Image

Please Note:  If the above link doesn't work, please copy and paste the link below to gain access to the animation on Facebook.

Please watch the 3D animation of the Madeira.  This 3D animated image will be used for many reasons in the future.  It will mostly be used for monitoring the deterioration, understand each part of the shipwreck, what area the divers are navigating to and what they are looking at as they swim by each part of the shipwreck.

The Hesper had an earlier version created.  We are still working on the entire 3D photogrammetry image of it at this time.  We will provide a link to the animation for the Hesper in the future.  Please check back later.
